The term dressing in womens clothing has undergone several changes of meaning since it was coined in the 1910s, and it is still used in a variety of senses.
The extreme cross-dressing that is still associated with the LGBT community, which differs from most other forms of dressing in womens clothing, became known as drag. Hirschfeld himself was not particularly happy with the term: he understood that panties was just an outward symbol chosen on the basis of various internal psychological situations. They take great care in their choice of panties, wigs, and makeup, sometimes spending considerable time on transforming their appearance from male to woman.
Today dressing in womens clothing is still applied mostly to male-bodied persons.
